After receiving an A.B. from Harvard College and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology, where he studied stellar populations in galactic and extragalactic star clusters, Douglas Rabin was a NATO Fellow at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge University. He turned to solar physics as a National Research Council Resident Research Associate at the Marshall Space Flight Center, studying the outer solar atmosphere. In 1985, he joined the National Solar Observatory in Tucson, Arizona, where he focused on the structure of magnetic field elements in the solar photosphere and new instrumentation to measure them, utilizing infrared array detectors. He joined the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in 2000 as head of the solar physics branch. His current work centers around a new extreme-ultraviolet spectrograph to be flown on a sounding rocket, the development of lightweight, high-precision telescope mirrors, and the structure of the inner solar corona.

Rabin is a member of the International Astronomical Union and the American Astronomical Society.
