EOS Project ScientistsDr. Joanna JoinerDeputy Aura (EOS Chemistry) Project Scientist Code 613.3 Phone: (301) 614-6247 Joanna Joiner received the S.B.(E.E.), S.M.(E.E.), and Ph.D.(E.E.) degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1987, 1988, and 1991, respectively. Her doctoral research concentrated on the millimeter-wave spectra of the Jovian planets and included radio astronomical observations of Jupiter. From 1991 to the present, her research at Goddard Space Flight Center has focused on the development of retrieval and data assimilation techniques for microwave, infrared, and ultraviolet/visible remote sensing instruments. She is a member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Campus Joint Center for Environmental Technology (UMBC/JCET) where she co-advised a student whose doctoral dissertation involved the assimilation of data from the radio occulation technique with the Global Positioning System. She and her colleagues were the first to demonstrate that information about cloud pressure and chlorophyll content could be retrieved using the properties of Raman scattering in the atmosphere and ocean. She is currently a member of the EOS Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) science team. She has also been actively involved with the EOS Aqua Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) science team in experiments that have improved weather forecasts by assimilating AIRS data. She served as an associate editor for the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society from 2000-2003. |
