Joseph M. Zawodny is a senior research scientist in the Climate Science Branch at NASA Langley Research Center where he has worked for the past 19 years (1988). His research interests include the development and demonstration of new remote sensing techniques and technologies primarily for use in the long-term monitoring of the variability of atmospheric trace species and aerosols. He is a co-investigator and was later appointed Project Scientist of SAGE II and SAGE III, as well as being the Principal Investigator for GAMS. He was responsible for developing the requirements for and optical design of the SAGE III instrument that enabled it to make Solar Occultation, Lunar Occultation, and Limb Scattering measurements. He guided the development of retrieval algorithms for solar and lunar occultation used by SAGE II and SAGE III. Dr. Zawodny has been a coauthor on virtually every UNEP/WMO International Ozone Trends Assessment and developed the first observational evidence of the response of stratospheric ozone to the changes in chlorine affected by the Montreal Protocol (and subsequent amendments). He also developed the first observational evidence of and the theory for a Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in NO2.

A graduate of Notre Dame (B.S. Physics 1980), he received a Masters (Astrogeophysics, 1982) and a Ph.D. (Astrophysical, Planetary, & Atmospheric Sciences, 1985) from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Afterward, he was an NRC post-doc at the NOAA Aeronomy Lab, also in Boulder, CO.
